Is a summer of street takeovers ahead for Chicago? – WGNTV (Chicago)

Two years ago, the city installed speed bumps and barricades at Lower Columbus Drive and South Water Street to prevent drifting takeovers there. And in July 2022, city council passed an ordinance that allows Chicago Police to impound vehicles involved in these events, and impose a $5,000 to $10,000 fine; Chicago police also created a street takeover task force. In some cases, arrests are made, but offenders are charged with misdemeanors.

Not only street takeovers, but law enforcement intelligence indicates these idiots intend to take over Millennium Park and/or the lakefront. But as Brandon says, “They’re just kids that need something constructive to do”. Good luck! People, including tourists, need to boycott the city.

Mexican Independence Day is an unofficial city sanctioned street takeover. The vehicles are gridlocked which should allow for capturing license plates to be ticketed. If no payment then boot and store. If not paid sell at auction or for scrap, Susie d drivers license number of registered owner. Put a lien on their paycheck. There are city, retail , residential cameras that can capture the cars license plates. This is beyond ridiculous that the city fails at again and again

The drifters and other non- demonized youths are very fluid. When you shut them down here, they go over there. When you catch up to them there, they return to their original spot or pick another. Until you surround the entire area and arrest all participants ( impeding a public way is a good starting point ) the police are going to be on the losing end of a game of “ ditch “ all summer.

The WGN article is a weird “check swing.” It doesn’t supplement the discussion of the takeover at Fullerton & Cannon with a reference to the more recent takeover at Ashland & Diversey—the latter being a more important shift of takeovers into non-touristy, residential areas of Lincoln Park/ Lakeview. The article headline threatens a “summer of takeovers,” but then only says “hmmmm, some aldermen wish for elevation to more than misdemeanors.” As if it’s some arcane aldermanic issue. No interviews of local residents, like residents from the southwest side where happens more, like from the people whose apartments overlook these takeovers.… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
