Through May alone, the City Council has already approved at least $145.3 million in taxpayer payments to settle lawsuits involving the Chicago Police Department. That amount — far above the $82.6 million Mayor Brandon Johnson and aldermen budgeted for settlements, verdicts and legal fees involving the department — does not include many smaller payments that face less aldermanic scrutiny.
The Corporation Counsels office is supposed to represent the city in lawsuits filed however the CC is filled with 3rd tier lawyers who were handed jobs thru nepotism or as favors to donors. They cannot defend cases because the office is mostly incompetent. Easier to settle, pay and move on. Many aldermen are in law offices who sue the city over a variety of issues and one should not dare to cut off a steady stream of tax dollars from these settlements. The settlement biz in Chicago is alive and well.

Need a state law setting a max limit, nothing more than 4,000,000! As it’s tax free!

Wildly varying amounts! It would be interesting to know how attorneys decide what is an appropriate settlement in each case.
It would also be interesting to know whether these figures are considered in negotiations over the police union contract.
