Editorial: The leaves are turning and Cook County still won’t commit to when those late property tax bills will be sent – Chicago Tribune*

"But that doesn’t help larger taxing bodies like financially beleaguered Chicago Public Schools, which as we’ve said is paying millions in additional interest on an existing line of credit to pay its bills while awaiting the property tax infusion. By the end of this month, if property tax bills still aren’t ready, CPS will have paid at least $10 million in interest as a result."

When they do come expect them to have hefty increases. Taxes will continue to rise for everyone for a long, long time. For as long as pensioners live the good life.

It’s not good that county taxing bodies are having to take out loans. Even more egregious is the impact this will have on mortgagees who carry escrow accounts. Vote Preckwinkle and company out. Could it be that Cook County Dems are planning for 2026 midterm elections? With delay in property tax bill increases won’t be public before those elections. And the tax increases won’t affect the election.

DuPage County allegedly uses the same company and software to handle its real estate taxes and it has not experienced any problems. There is a lot more going on here than meets the eye. Expect some unexpected revenue event to impact Cook County and Chicago.

I don’t understand the downvotes. Mark F raises a valid question. DuPage is a large county. This provides an assumption the system is scalable and can support a large entity.. Why isn’t Cook County able to timely issue bills? The vendor has been in place since 2015. As far as what is going on, who knows, but it raises significant questions as to why the system isn’t working, including the capabilities of the CIO staff.

On the downvotes, you can assume there are Cook County hacks who routinely just pound the downvote button on lots of things here.
