Merritt, the group says its goal isn’t to leave the Union, but to escape what they call political neglect from the state’s urban power base: “Secession is when the southern states just up and left the Union. What we’re doing is legal and constitutional—we need the consent of our legislature and of Congress. We don’t identify with the Confederacy. That was a racist movement, and that’s not what we are.”
Don’t forget counties at the north end of the state. Check the most recent national election results – most of them align politically with their southern neighbors.

Actually, the Confederacy wasn’t a racist movement, but more a collective of Southerners that didn’t think they should be beholden to the North. They were doing business quite well with England, amongst other countries, and didn’t care for Yankees bossing them around. The average Confederate soldier was a poor farmer that didn’t even own slaves, but had enough gumption not to put up with Northern nonsense. Meanwhile in NY there were riots by those seeking to avoid military service. Slavery was one component of the Civil War, but far from the main one.

A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
