Amid random ‘puncher’ attacks in Chicago, state panel aims to address jail churn with psych treatment – Chicago Sun-Times

The Fitness to Stand Trial Task Force was created in a law signed by Gov. JB Pritzker in August that also gives court systems the ability to move people charged with petty crimes but who are unfit to stand trial out of county jails and into outpatient psychiatric treatment. Supporters say that will help address their illnesses more quickly and will also free up space in overcrowded state mental hospitals for people charged with more serious offenses.

The article starts out by LaPointe noting mentally ill people are often the victims, but immediately rolls into how many mentally ill people are out and about committing crimes because there is no housing in facilities for them. It purports the reason is because there is no sustained care. The mentally ill who commit crimes need to be recognized as criminals, and not justified for their actions.
