CTA Vice President of Security Kevin Ryan would only say the expansion of the gun detection system is happening "real soon," and comes when CTA is already seeing a decline in crime. From Jan. 1 through Feb. 8, robberies have dropped 18 percent and larceny thefts have dropped 11 percent, but criminal sexual assaults and aggravated battery are up.
What is this gun detection system they are talking about? What is its track record in other locations (if there is one)? Will people be arrested who are detected carrying guns? How many false positives does this gun detection system generate? If people are arrested who are not carrying guns, is the city prepared for lawsuits? Will the system continue to be used if more minorities are detected carrying guns that are represented in the general population of Chicago?A lot of unanswered questions here.

Robberies and thefts dropped after ICE took out part of the thug element that was preying upon CTA riders, just not the rapists and batterers. That and even much of the thug element (except for those very dedicated rapists and batterers) stays home when the global warming sinks the temperatures below zero and holds it there for days.
Police presence and tossing the thugs into jail would certainly help beleaguered CTA riders in regards to their personal safety. If AI points out the thugs to the cops, fine. There has to be visible physical deterrence though.
Isn’t Illinois Fun?

“ In 2024, CTA started testing new AI gun detection technology. Using software, it could see if anyone coming into a train station was carrying a gun.” If this technology is legit, it must have wider applications. But what worth does this have if not connected to law enforcement for real time intervention? Is it called “Pre-Shotspotter” and will Brandon Johnson object to it as racist and ineffective and will the far left zanies clamor against it? You’d think that is a facetious question but in today’s world it’s a real possibility if not likelihood.

If they just stop the CCL carry ban on public transportation the problem will solve itself.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
