An estimated 200 union members rallied on the east side of the Capitol Wednesday in favor of a bill to allow school support staff to apply for unemployment benefits during the summer.
It’s not a rally for summer pay – it’s a rally for a unearned, and unwarranted handout.

That they’re support staff cuts a little ice with me, if it were the CTU teachers, then no way. Fact remains that the seasonality of these jobs is well known and they could elect to be paid over 12 months. Let’s keep unemployment insurance benefits for the truly unemployed.

These workers have the opportunity to elect wage payments on the basis of either ten or twelve months so they already have an opportunity to have income during the off months. Also, they have employer paid medical and other benefits coverage so they are not terminated employees. They are also not “laid-off” as they accepted employment with the understanding of their work schedule. Surely there should be no unemployment unless they are actually terminated and paying COBRA rates for their medical and other coverage and cannot earn any pension service credit.
Thats exactly right. I was in that category. And did have co-workers who wouldn’t spread it out and their credit cards would be maxed out when they came back

This sounds like a paid three-month vacation, courtesy of the IL taxpayer.
Yes, we wouldn’t want them to find other jobs for the summer, so they’d work 12 months a year like most other workers.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
