Mayor Craig Johnson also pointed to the financial upside, with data centers generating major revenue in 2025, including $45 million in property taxes, $11.1 million in building permit fees, $4.5 million in electric tax revenue, and $1 million in sales tax revenue.
At no point did Johnson mention the increase in costs of electricity to consumers, the likely increase in residential water costs nor the plunging property values in the vicinity of a data center. Like JB, he’s all full of moonlight and canoes, but the reality is much different. IL residents of the St. Louis metro east area are up in arms over their increased costs of electricity courtesy of data centers.
