Willie Wilson says he was spurned by Lightfoot, now working with aldermen on reparations ordinance – Chicago Sun-Times

Their draft reparations ordinance will be introduced in September, when the City Council reconvenes after the traditional summer recess. It calls for:

• Free education, job training and apprenticeship programs at the City Colleges of Chicago “leading directly to job opportunities for the impacted population” along with a “curriculum that seeks to undo the lingering effects and trauma of the Transatlantic slave trade.”

• Free public transportation on the CTA.

• Development of an early childhood education plan at Chicago Public Schools for African American students living in poverty along with “tutors and specialized attention for impacted students.”

• Free water filters to deal with high lead levels.

• Examining the feasibility of creating a “prescription drug benefit for senior citizens…forced to choose between paying their rent and buying medicine.”

• A full range of housing services and assistance programs.

• Updated city’s minority set-aside requirements “with the express goal of increasing the number of African American vendors and contracts for services to an equitable level reflecting their population in the city (31%).”

Reparations will build a huge wall between the races. And after the payments start flowing there will be no decline in current race card rhetoric. If anything it will be worse. Sharpton is not about to give up calling everyone a racist just because he got reparations passed. Also it is an impossible administrative task to implement.

How will Chicago’s Hispanic population, one equal to that of African Americans, feel about being on the hook for reparations?

I’m sure the Mexican-American war had something to do with this and they are some way responsible.

Wilson argued that, without reparations, African Americans will continue to leave Chicago in droves. – let them leave! No more freebies! Hundreds of millions of dollars in “programs’ for these communities have already been spent – at the tax payer expense. How this is even a topic of discussion is maddening.

“• Free water filters to deal with high lead levels.” This is the only issue that should even be considered, and not because of reparations, but because the city is pumping lead into homes. Reparations is truly a divisive issue. Never forget, Illinois was a free state. Chicago was a free city. No one here ever owned slaves legally. Yes there were some people long before IL was even recognized as a distinct state in the northwest territory that owned slaves, but they were all in southern Illinois and their numbers were statistically insignificant. My ancestors from the north didn’t… Read more »

Check out http://www.fluoridealert.org and fluoride action network. Fluoride added to water over time leaches lead out of pipes and is also a known neurotoxin. There are links to fluoride and violent behavior and many inner city homes (compared to suburban homes) tend to be older and have older style pipes inside not just lead mains to the home. Fluoride can lower IQ levels and slow down thyroids hence it can be harder to lose weight. NCBI(pubmed.gov) has many scientific studies on this. Having filters that filter out fluoride/lead and heavy metals would be a cheaper alternative. P.S. Fluoride is banned… Read more »

Get your popcorn and watch this one.
Imagine the debate Over what characteristics qualify an individual for “slave based reparations”.
Then there will be a governmental process to determine eligibility.
What could go wrong?
Then all the other aggrieved racial, ethnic, gender, economically challenged, lawyers, etc will want the same considerations.
Then of course there is the lack of resources(cash) to make this work; so services will have to be denied or rationed to those not covered by reparation program.

I wonder if the reparation program will cover rat abatement.

Yea, exactly, how many folks will be trying to pull a ‘pocahontas ‘ and claim they have some remote family history of slavery? Ages ago i remember a fellow parent, as white as snow, claiming she was part native american to get her kid in cps selective enrolment schools (just like sharkeys kids). Reperation ordinace will be no differt–a lawyers dream. Offices filled with city workers trying to settle all the claims..them every other group that feel victimize will file suit..except for guilty old white guys, like me stuck with the bill

Are there any estimates of what this might cost the city of Chicago?

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
