Ald. Samantha Nugent said she was originally told the city would be conducting an Accelerated Moving Event, or AME, at the Far Northwest Side park the week of Feb. 24. Now, she’s being told by Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office that the move will be delayed due to President Donald Trump’s attempts to freeze federal funding. A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze federal spending Jan. 31.

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. So, of course, blame it on Trump, since the cuts are only threatened. This is a city affair, the city should provide the funding, this is not a federal issue. Johnson is always looking for the state or feds to bail him out. Thought he has all the answers.
