After Ald. Edward Burke was charged in 2019 with attempted extortion for allegedly trying to steer business to his private law firm from a company seeking to renovate a fast-food restaurant in his ward, Lightfoot made limiting aldermanic prerogative in order to fight corruption a key pillar of her successful mayoral campaign. But aldermen have opposed her efforts, arguing they know better than City Hall bureaucrats what’s appropriate on particular blocks in their wards.
