Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Alderpersons excludes those who do not identify as a person.
I propose Alderthings.
The Alderpersons should be challenging the mayor and Lil Kim. You could change out the Superintendent tomorrow and you won’t see any difference. This is all on Lori and Kim, and they are just fine with it. Welcome to hell.
Criticize him all you want, but he is a weakling incapable of doing nothing but promoting merit officers several levels above their competence. He is acting as a cabana boy and yes man for the mayor and is only carrying out her orders to destroy the CPD
Just Brown attending a scheduled beating, it’s nothing but theatre. The alderman play their part too. The only actors missing are the dead; they only come back for elections.
Uh…… “Citywide, during the first six months of 1992, the 7,285 shootings was an increase of 8 percent over last year. Over the weekend (July 23, 1992), the city recorded its 500th homicide of 1992, the highest number at this time in a calendar year. In 1988, the 500th murder occurred Sept. 27.” https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1992-07-23-9203060406-story.html Chicago only has 3625 shootings through the first 9 months of the year. Just think about that: 1992 had twice as many shootings in six months than 2021 has in nine months. Those were really, really violent times. In many of our lifetimes. That was only… Read more »
“The East Chicago Avenue district, which includes the Near North Side lakefront from the Chicago River to Fullerton Avenue, saw an increase in homicides from 7 in 1990 to 19 last year.”
Today this is near north into Lincoln Park and used to house the Cabrini Greens projects. It had 19 murders in 1991. Just try to comprehend that for even one second.

The 90’s were the wild west days and things calmed down with some actual law enforcement going on. With the new regime of Preckwinkle, Foxx, Lightfoot and Evans running the show there is no effective arm of the justice system. 2021 is on schedule to be the most violent year since 2010 which is only 11 years ago. Approaching 700 murders and over 3600 shootings, well that ain’t nothing to sneeze at. Over 800 dead and pushing 5000 shootings at year end is a possibility.
All the alderman are calling for hiring more cops. But I believe, even with all the recent cop retirements, Chicago still has one of the highest cop to citizen ratio of any big city (Chicago used to be 2nd highest # of cops per capita next to DC). Nobody in press asks? Nobody asks how cops are deployed or how the contract effects performance? Just sign the new contracts w gigantic pay raises and hire MORE in bankrupt Chicago
here’s some stats from 2019, showing Chicago with 3rd highest # of officers per capita.

Also, strange from googling around, I can’t find any info on CURRENT # of CPD officers? ST article fails to provide that figure as well.
The # of officers per capita is important but equally important is the amount of crime they must deal with. I know for a fact that CPD is overwhelmed by the surge in crime and there just aren’t enough officers and detectives to respond to and solve all the crimes. Beat officers run from radio call to radio call and detectives run from murder to murder. There’s little time to do an investigation or follow up before the next homicide or attempted murder case lands on their desk. By comparison, Los Angeles has 285 murders this year (compared to our… Read more »
I tried to look on CPD web site and can’t find # of current police officers? Am I missing something? Or what’s the mystery?
