Arne Duncan: Chicago needs a mayor who will tell CPD and its union the hard truth – Chicago Tribune*

"The biggest issue facing our city is gun violence, and one of the biggest barriers to addressing it is an ineffective Police Department...In high-crime neighborhoods, arrest rates for nonfatal shootings and even homicides are so low that people feel they have to take matters in their own hands. Absent real justice, you get street justice."

Fat chance and the governor is going to lose 50 lbs. Illinois is the laughingstock of the country.

Arne Duncan needs to sit down and STFU!

Merit promotions ordered via Federal judge Prentice Marshalls decisions years ago has been the cause of an ineffective police department. Promoted because of race or political connections only. Many promoted without even taking an exam. Promoted to detective, sergeant, lieutenant and then an exempt position where those merit leaders molded policy. Many were basically incompetent but had those connections and lived up to their incompetence. Sad but the CPD is lost and will never recover.

There is no such thing as gun violence. There is violence committed by people with guns.
Guns NEVER shoot themselves.

Really? Is anyone going to take him seriously on anything. As Superintendent of Chicago public schools he did nothing except shepherd the ongoing decline. As Obama’s Sec of Education he was a total zero. Accomplished absolutely nothing. So now we are going to take advice from him?

The only other choice is to take advice from the CTU.

That most certainly is not the only other choice!

And to think that there were rumors that he was being groomed to run for POTUS!

Exactly what you’d expect a woke progressive such as Arne to argue. Plays well in the wards where 80%+ of the people likely to vote are Black, over 70% of whom have bought into what the Marxists running the CTU are selling. Chicago’s in a world of hurt when you think about what’s happening here. Likely a 3 or 4 percentage point margin of victory for one of two completely different mayoral candidates in an already disastrously run city, where two-thirds of the residents who are eligible to vote won’t even bother casting a ballot. I just don’t see how… Read more »

The left was warned this would happen, with their constant cries of “Defund the Police”…

You won…!

You beat the police into submission…

They are not stupid, they see the writing on the wall…

Do your job & risk getting fired or going to jail…

What I originally thought were “unintended” consequences, I now view as the desired outcome…

Arne neglects to mention that at least two police superintendents advocated longer sentences for gun crimes. Little wonder why cops are apathetic when it comes to enforcing the law. He also neglects to mention that so many gun crimes are unsolved because of lack of cooperation from the public due to fear of retaliation, not necessarily fear of the cops.

Arne, your parents should have named you “Arse.” The issue is Lil Kim and her inability or unwillingness to prosecute COCs. When there are no consequences to criminal behavior you get more of it.

To blame the CPD for crime is typical of lefties and wokesters who can’t associate a cause with the effect. The CPD and their union has just “learned” to play the game and minimize their losses.

It’s actually akin to blaming teachers for curriculum or outcomes when it’s the administration that sets curriculum and about half the students are chronically truant. Criminals are responsible for crime and poor student behavior is responsible for education outcomes. The Foxx’s of the world exacerbate the problem just as school administrators make it worse with ridiculous initiatives like common core.

Wokesters aren’t the only ones that can’t associate cause with effect.

Police are not responsible for crime. The police are responsible for CRIME PREVENTION.

Even the Department of Justice agrees that …”crime prevention has been a traditional duty of law enforcement, tracing back to its early origins in the United States and England…”

https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/crime-prevention-whose-duty-whose-responsibility

In this article link, the author suggests that “…the community and that the community must resume its historic responsibility for these crimes, leaving the full-time law enforcement professional free to focus on professional criminals and serious habitual offenders…”

The reality is that the community demanded Police STOP preventing crime. After the St. George Floyd riots, the wokesters screamed “stop harassing black criminals! Leave them alone!” And the police, unfortunately, complied with this request, and left the community alone. Now CPD stopped arresting people. Arrests have plummeted in 2020 and 2021, I don’t have the 2022 figures, but I would suspect they are similar. Arrests are down by my back of the napkin math about 60% since 2019!!! Arrests are down 60% while the murder rate has doubled.! Police are not doing their job preventing crime! 2011 – 2015… Read more »

Police officers didn’t decide this but it was forced upon them by the administrators/mayors of these large cities. Teachers and police officers are front line employees doing their job as prescribed by leadership. Blaming front line employees for administrative failures is pathetic. It’s great red meat for far right crazies to blame teachers but does nothing to improve the situation.

PPF, the “I was only following orders” defense failed at Nuremberg, and doesn’t work here either. Street cops gone fetal – for whatever reason – cannot say “my boss told me to let criminals go”. They have the obligation wearing that badge, when they took an oath, to serve and protect. Many officers have left the force rather than dishonor their oath to serve and protect. Those that remain behind to “just make it home” long enough to collect their pension are 100% absolutely bear some responsibility for the predicament Chicago is in. Yes, the situation is bad out there… Read more »

Teachers and police officers following legal orders does not equate to Nuremberg. Way to let everyone know you have zero credibility with rational people. Sure those type of comments play well to right wing extremists but land flat on the rest of the population.

The comparison between CPD results and CTU results would only be valid if the police had been out in force clamoring for the re-election of Kim Foxx, as teacher unions have pushed the progressive agenda for years. As the old saying goes, “be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.”
