Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Spending almost $400,000 to earn a degree in Poetry Appreciation and then get a job as a purple haired latte server seems like a waste of money
I stopped reading when they said ‘elite’ – does driving an expensive, most likely overpriced, car make me ‘elite’?
These kids need to look.on the bright side of things. Sleepy Joe’s gonna forgive their loans anyway.
Studying something hard trying to obtain marketable skills is fir chumps. Drink premium beer and chase skirts. Now, while you’re still young and can pull all-nighters. You’ve got nothing to lose but you’re virginity!
The internet pundit who shall not be named (and no, I won’t name him) argues that most colleges hate men; and without external pressure, would accept only women. But the reality is that colleges must reluctantly accept men because: 1. most women want to meet boys, and have boyfriends, and other fun, 2. male college athletes tend to do well in the corporate world and become donors. This means guys aren’t chasing skirt these days as much as girls are chasing men, and outside of athletes, many men accepted to college are little more than niche identites, like gay north… Read more »
Debtsor, you’re probably spot on. After all, I went to Michigan State University in the 70s (when it didn’t require a mortgage and you could actually work your way thru.)
Michigan State U is surprisingly still only 51F/49M, with an overwhelmingly white and int’l population. The graduate school is slightly more lopsided at 55F/45M and still over 3/4ths white and int’l. These are kids who would have gone to ND, Loyola, NW, NYU, these types of schools, but were rejected from all the usual private schools, and end up at some State U. The elite and selective private schools seem attract… Read more »
Articles like this claim, “…at the most elite U.S. schools, there’s no sign of a slowdown in demand for coveted spots…” Sure, applications are up and admission rates are down. Things are popular, right? There’s never ending supply of students willing to pay $80k a year. But the reality from 30,000 feet is a lot different, and few dare speak the truth. Schools are accepting fewer and fewer qualified students who can pay anything near full tuition. As a result, they are destroying their legacy academic reputations. For example, at UofC nearly 60% of freshman receive financial aid withe average… Read more »
Huge pensions cost a lot of money. Never going to change as long as educators run the business of educating. All the money in the world is not enough to satisfy them. Students get loans and the government forgives them. Good work if you can get it.
