Banana Republic to leave the Magnificent Mile – Crain’s*

744 N. Michigan Ave. Banana Republic plans to close its longtime store on North Michigan Avenue, joining the swelling crowd of retailers ditching the city’s most important—but now beleaguered—shopping strip.

Formerly called the Magnificent Mile. Christmas shopping, lunch/dinner at a fancy restaurant like the Cape Cod Room. Go on a date with the boy wearing a suit with a vest and tie, the girl with the best dress or outfit she had. Those were the days, now gone forever

An investment is only as good as the underlying assets upon which it relies. As retailers and residents leave, as city schools fail to produce graduates with marketable skills and no possibilities for legitimate earned income, things look very bleak for the government pension plans. We become a bigger version of Detroit. Bankers and real estate scavengers will profit. The poor will be abandoned and the mindless voters who kept these empty politicians in power for so long will be elsewhere polluting other places with their vote.

These Michigan Ave stores would be wise to adopt much smaller footprints. The Ugg store always seems crowded because it’s a small space and they seemingly don’t have all their inventory on the floor. The Levi’s store, on the other hand, is far too big and is feels empty displaying hundreds and hundreds of pants no one will ever buy.

Memories of returning a pile of sweaters and slacks two days after Christmas and exchanging them for the exact same clothes and getting more because everything was on sale. My work wardrobe would be set for another year; gift dollars maximized.

That BR always seemed too big, even by 2002 fashion standards. Not too long ago, there was another BR right across the street in Water Tower Place.

Any retailer left on Michigan Ave. is simply running a donation center. It’s getting to be like that in the suburbs too. People just take what they want and know there won’t be any consequences. Someone should do a study of major retailers and review the growth in retail theft. How much of the inflation number is attributed to certain segments taking merchandise for free and letting everyone else pay for it?

You could also apply this logic to “Health Care.” When you pay a hospital bill are you really paying just your bill?

When you look at what’s happened to the Mag Mile, and now the Loop, because of Democrat woeness it’s just stunning. Never seen this level of self-inflicted damage except for Detroit.

Spot on and I’m originally from Detroit. Even today nobody even thinks of shopping in the D except for Eastern Market.

If Michigan Avenue was the Titanic, now is when you would hear the orchestra playing “Nearer My God To Thee.”

Banana Republic owner Gap Inc. is a woke company, but funny, they no longer want to do business in woke Chicago. Obviously no consideration given to all of the security guards who will be unemployed when their store closes. Could it be that Gap Inc. makes woke statements but really doesn’t believe in being woke?

Most of these apparel stores employ primarily women and members of the LGBTQ community. They’re the ones out of a job.
