The Treasurer’s report, linked from the Sun-Times article, notes that “The 10 community areas that experienced the biggest increase in median housing values were majority Black and poor… ”
So if the assessments are correct (and they probably are), these areas are becoming more desirable. Still, values in these areas remain lower than in more affluent areas, which means the proportional discount of the homeowner exemption (and old person exemption, where applicable) is greater.

What race are Johnson and Preckwinkle? So it’s not whitey! Plus the ENTIRE STATE is screwed up AND corrupt. Spend less and taxes SHOULD decline, but we all know thats never going to happen. It all sucks!!!!

Oh Pinhead will blame it on Trump or whitey and then we’ll watch the dumb ones believe him.
Happens in my downstate district as well. Representative Katie Stuart regarding costs of living increases families are facing posted “Washingtons massive tax bill threatens to raise costs even further” without naming any specific tax hikes families are facing. Quite honestly aren’t taxes being lowered for families? Yet she posted that, the local media printed it and that makes it gospel truth for the many here. Then we wonder why Illinois votes the way it does. https://www.theintelligencer.com/opinion/article/katie-stuart-illinois-veto-session-21171913.php
Right, that’s total bunk by Katie Stuart. All income groups got tax cuts. So is the rest of her article, which I just read. Will you send in a retort to it or should I?
Be my guest because the publicity might help this wonderful publication that is very unknown in this downstate liberal utopia. The real question is would it even be published – a fact I well know from the past?

I moved from Lakeview in mid-2024. So our closing had us paying the buyers an estimate of our share of 2024 taxes (maybe we got the buyers to assume a 10% increase). Now I see from 2023 to 24 the actual taxes went up 28%! Enjoy!
I have a friend whose part of a house in Lincoln Park went up 50%.

Don’t Care.
A Zillow on our old homestead in Will County shows it’s over 15K for property taxes in 2024.
When Cook County charges 15K on a little bungalow, then we’ll talk

Get used to higher taxes, more to come next year and the year after. Just look back the last 50 years and the picture is clear as day. Public Sector gets more and the private sector gets less.

My old condo went up 20% on current bill. Property assessed value did not change. It’s not a case of whether neighborhood is White or black, it’s based on how much the various entities need. The only way the tax rate will go down is if the units of government spend less. If you look at historical data even during the 2008-20XX downturn revenues did not decrease. Property values went down so they increased the rate. “The City’s aggregate property tax levy is divided by the equalized assessed value (“EAV”) of all property in the City to determine the tax… Read more »
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.

revenues did not decrease. Used wrong word, maybe Mark can correct typo.
Fixed it. And you sure are right: Just from 2019 to now city budget went up 68%.
Buckle in, this is what you voted for people.
