Cancel mob at DePaul University goes after (wait for it) Eric Zorn! – Wirepoints Quickpoint

Former Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn should be disinvited from an upcoming panel at DePaul University, according to two students writing in the school’s paper, The Depaulia.

In addition, according to column, the Society for Professional Journalists, which is one of the panel sponsors, “advised students to attend the in-person panel and publicly voice their concerns to Zorn himself.” I think we know what that means.

The column’s authors, Sonal Soni and Nadia Hernandez, say Zorn, while writing for the Tribune, “expressed racist views about Latinx youth and great insensitivity towards police brutality,” has shown racial bias, “made publicly racist sentiments” and  “contributes to racist ideologies.”

This is utterly absurd.

Zorn, while at the Tribune, was probably Illinois’ most prominent columnist on the left. He is no racist. We read pretty much all of his columns in recent years, usually disagreeing with him, sometimes in writing. But nothing we have ever seen from him provides the slightest justification for any of the slurs directed at him.

The alleged particulars cited in the Soni/Hernandez DePaulia column are about Zorn’s articles on Adam Toledo who was shot by Chicago police earlier this year, Kyle Rittenhouse who shot two people during street protests in Wisconsin in 2020, and Trayvon Martin who was fatally shot in Florida in 2012.

Read Zorn’s columns on these matters yourself, most which are linked in the DePaulia column. There’s nothing to criticize.

Particularly egregious is the DePaulia column’s criticism of Zorn’s piece about the Trayvon Martin shooting by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was acquitted, yet the DePaulia column says outright that “Zimmerman murdered 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.” I hope there’s a section in the panel focused on defamation law.

While I am no fan of Eric’s, what’s happening on most campuses is pathetic as leftist idealogues rule them. Thus sinketh DePaul University deeper into the pit of woke.

“nor a contributor to ideologies of hate”

Oh, he is hateful, very much so. Have you ever read his posts? He hates, mocks and ridicules anyone that disagrees with his narrow set of progressive values. Hate a home in his heart.

Eric Zorn was one of the major reasons I dropped my subscription to the Tribune after receiving it for over 30 years. His leftist garbage was more than I could take.

The Tribune turned to further to the left as their subscriptions numbers were falling. I hardly recognize them.

DePaulia. DePaul prides itself on diversity, but invites controversial guest speaker Eric Zorn. By Sonal Soni and Nadia Hernandez. September 26, 2021. “DePaul’s upcoming “Tough Times for Local Journalism” panel next Wednesday features former Chicago Tribune columnists, including Eric Zorn — who wrote an opinion article following the police murder of 13-year-old Adam Toledo that expressed racist views about Latinx youth and great insensitivity towards police brutality.” Wednesday October 6, 2021? And, where is the time and what is the location of the “Tough Times for Local Journalism” panel? It’s unusual for an article to mention an event but not include… Read more »

I graduated DePaul in 1976 with a BA in Accountancy. At that time the religious Brothers still held some sway, but even then the place was being overrun with leftists and union rabble rousers. I was after a business degree and worked full time while attending school and had no time for social nonsense. I was in my 3rd year before someone told me the Blue Demons was our bassetball team. Looks like the semi-literate woke crowd now rules the roost. Such a shame. I met my first wife on an elevator going to class in the 25 East Jackson… Read more »

I miss the days when journalists relished in the opportunity of interviewing “controversial” public figures. Remember Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker interview?

Journalists are supposed to be inquisitive creatures. Why not take this opportunity to ask specific, thoughtful questions to Zorn himself? But no, they’re going to either cancel his visit or shout him down. Academia is anything but academic.

DePaul has turned itself into a freak show. Top notch employers have taken note.

You can see this somewhat reflected in the enrollment numbers as DePaul’s Business major is on the decline with Digital Media on the rise. The most popular major for incoming freshmen is Film and Television. DePaul seems to be leaning heavily into their target demographic which is increasingly woke Hispanic students spinning biased tales of social justice into an already saturated market.

Leaving the trouble makers at the paper is acceptance by the college.

I rarely agreed with Zorn and felt he was part of the left-wing media bias that was working to destroy the country. When he heard about the objections he probably agreed with his accusers and took a vow to be better.

Number of half-empty Chicago public schools doubles, yet lawmakers want to extend school closing moratorium – Wirepoints

A set of state lawmakers want to extend CPS’ current school closing moratorium to February 1, 2027 – the same year CPS is set to transition to a fully-elected school board. That means schools like Manley High School, with capacity for more than 1,000 students but enrollment of just 78, can’t be closed for anther three years. The school spends $45,000 per student, but just 2.4% of students read at grade level.
