Catalytic converter thefts in Chicago at an all-time high, police say – WBBM (Chicago)

Chicago police reported nearly 4,000 catalytic converter thefts through July of 2022 compared to 1,400 thefts reported in the same time period last year. “We need federal laws on this, because all of this stuff is being transported across state lines,” Ald. Scott Waguespack said. “Somebody is getting those ounces of metals that are very expensive.”

Pretty simple solution. Require anyone that wants to scrap more than one converter a year to obtain a scrappers license. Hate to put any burden on the scrap yards to enforce this but when someone comes in with five converters and they’re cut off with parts of the exhaust still connected you know they’re stolen.

Do something about it? Now that’s funny. Jan 1, 2023 you will be let out of jail with no cash bond and a promise to appear in court for a variety of serious, violent felonies. Theft of a car part will only get a yawn from the prosecutors and judges. Do something about it, LOL.

Hmm, “Promise to Appear” is what millions of illegal immigrants have been given. How’s that working out?

4000 in half a year? That’s insane! Do something BD Lori! Is someone from Lil Kim’s crew driving the getaway car? How about you go after the buyers of these stolen converters as well. This is a dirty business. Charge them all.

Wirepoints needs to investigate the amount of time convicted CC thieves actually spend in the pokey. A cost/benefit sort of study.
