Chicago aldermanic control issue again stalls granny flats – Illinois Policy

Granny flats, in-law or illegal apartments…whatever you want to call them, are ubiquitous in Chicago. As a trilingual, retired real estate appraiser with a 30-year career in Chicago, I’ve seen lots. It was such a pain to honestly note the improvements on the appraisal, as nobody wanted to deal with the illegality. I used to avoid taking accurate pictures, or tell the owner to move the stove temporarily. The issue with additional apartments in single family homes is always the second, or third kitchens.
