Chicago lags as 8 of 13 Illinois metro areas add jobs in April – Illinois Policy

Taking a longer view, nine Illinois metro areas added jobs in the 12 months through April. Seven reported higher employment than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one metro outperformed the U.S. job recovery rate: Bloomington at 6.9 percent, compared to 4.1 percent nationwide.

The BLS data doesn’t paint a true picture by lumping in the growth of the SMA of St Louis MO and Cape Giradeau MO with IL. Of the approx 2.82M people in the St Louis SMA, no more than 25% are in IL. I’m guessing the same for Cape Giradeu. So that reduces the IL April job growth by 4,575 to 4,925 for an increase of 0.07%, or nearly unchanged.
