Chicago’s $16.7 billion budget for 2022 included nearly $2 billion in spending on affordable housing, mental health, violence prevention, youth job programs and help for unhoused Chicagoans. It is unclear whether those programs, funded by the Chicago Rescue Plan, will continue to be funded now that the city has spent the bulk of the federal COVID-19 relief package.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
