Chicago May Take At Least 40 Years, $12 Billion, To Replace Lead Pipes, Officials Say – Block Club Chicago

In November, the EPA announced a $336 million loan to Chicago through the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act program for lead pipe replacement. According to an EPA release, the city’s water department will use the money to replace up to 30,000 lead pipes that deliver water to homes around Chicago, creating about 2,700 jobs.

Ha ha it’s gonna take Chicago and Springfield 40 years to get the lead out of there asses and get something done

True or false: 1) the main problem is with lead SERVICE pipes rather than mains? 2) the house or building owner has legal responsibility to maintain and/or replace service pipes? Landlords, it seems, are responsible if tenants are injured by lead paint and probably by lead pipe. Understandably, replacement is very costly and many owners can’t “afford” it. BUT is that any reason the city should pay for it? (Especially pay 3X the going rate?) Why not have the city loan money to owners and take a lien on the real estate. This explains many of the problems in Chicago from mental illnesses to behavioral issues such as crime and simply not being able to distinguish right from wrong. Lead poisoning from decades of exposure.
