Chicago mayor pushes for granny flats citywide to boost affordable housing – Illinois Policy

This latest push for additional dwelling units comes amid growing urgency around the city’s affordable housing crisis. Chicago is short more than 120,000 affordable housing units, and the state of Illinois needs to build 227,000 during the next five years to keep up with demand. But the proposal is facing resistance from some city council members, especially those representing districts largely zoned for single-family housing.

Now here is a chance for some of Chicago’s news organization to do some real undercover reporting. If granny flats are approved they need to set up a couple of granny flats and see who has their hands out for cash to approve the wide variety of permits and inspections that will be needed to get these granny flats a certificate of occupancy(Think of the Mirage Bar.). Nah I am just dreaming…there is no corruption in Chicago…right?

Single family homes are just that, single family. Having an elderly parent is ok. Not framing 3-4 families in one house is not. If that’s what you want, try an apartment building. Cook county needs to enforce limitations on the number of families living in single family homes o protect the other homeowners.
