Chicago named ‘Best Big City in the US’ by Condé Nast Traveler for 7th consecutive year – NBC5 (Chicago)

Chicago's winning entry reads, "A world-class destination known for its impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs, and massive brewing scene, it’ll take several repeat visits to get through your list of must-dos. Most people start downtown—from the Magnificent Mile to the ritzy Gold Coast to funky Old Town—but there are 77 neighborhoods to explore, where you'll find cutting-edge restaurants, chilled-out corner bars, and, no matter where you go, some of the most pleasant people you'll find anywhere."

The things that make a destination an interesting and exciting place to visit for a brief time are very different than the things that make that same destination a place people want to move away from. High property taxes, failing schools, government corruption and crime may be things a traveler will look past for a long weekend but will be very attentive to when selecting a new home city.

We went out for dinner last night in Printers row. Coming back up north through the loop we saw hundreds of illegals, kids, what I can only describe as Tupac looking thug types hanging out among the illegals, guys in those neon batmobile trike things booming rap music, this was mostly between Harrison up to Jackson, then it got more normal. When we got home we checked the scanner tweets and three calls to that area in the past two hours including a male hispanic stabbed by the library. Great job democrats, I can recall when those side streets were… Read more »

Joe Biden Tells Democrats to Treat Future White Minority ‘with Respect’ October 1, 2023
“We’re going to be — very shortly — a minority-white European country, and sometimes my [Democrat] colleagues don’t speak enough to make it clear that that is not going to change how we operate,” he told the progressive billionaire-funded ProPublica website. Democrats must treat white Americans with respect, as they and their children quickly become a racial minority in their own nation.

Stan doesn’t understand that this isn’t about black and brown people, it’s about difficult cultures. You and I don’t have anything in common culturally with the thugs causing trouble in Printers Row. They have a culture of crime and violence. And they like it that way. They like to crowd sidewalks and cause mayhem and violence. They have completely different values. And when you complain about the obvious degradation of the neighborhood, they call you a racist. If these were a bunch of BIPOC depaul or UIC Law school students hanging out after class, you probably wouldn’t have thought twice.… Read more »

Conde Nast voters are mostly older people who actually used to read magazines — when they still existed — their fond memory of Chicago is from the 1980s — and the hooker they met on Rush Street

Conde Nast must be short of funds. They must have cancelled all there newspaper subscriptions and cable tv outlets so they don’t ready any news. And the budget cuts must mean they don’t send anyone to visit the cities they are rating. What a crock!

And I guess they never heard of Nashville, Orlando, Jacksonville, Austin, and all the other really great cities to which people are stampeding.

The Mug Mile is simply spectacular! And when you get tired of looking over your shoulder at the thugs and gangbangers downtown, you can head to one of the 77 charming neighborhoods to get carjacked or shot! What a delight!

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
