Chicago Public Schools floats hundreds of layoffs as one option to close $529 million budget gap – Chalkbeat Chicago

A classroom full of middle school students sitting at school desks.Between 1,600 and 1,700 positions based inside schools could be cut, according to a presentation used to brief board members. The presentation suggests there are ways to lessen the blow, specifically by getting more state funding or more city money than it is already expecting from special taxing districts meant to spur development, known as TIFs.

Cheap talk, they are always hiring more and more people who do nothing for education.

CTU will never agree to that. CTU will protect their jobs at the expense of students and taxpayers. All while providing students with an inferior education.

So let me get this straight: the decline in enrollment over the past decade has been over 20%. They are now “threatening” to a Reduction in Force of 4%. This sounds like the most obvious solution. No need to consider other alternatives. The private sector does this every day. It’s called rightsizing. And is still woefully short of what could/should be done.

article doesn’t state, but it’s my understanding CTU won in new contract NO layoffs and hiring of additional new CTU staff not less? Therefore, the proposed cut of 1,600 to 1,700 must be non-CTU staff (SEIU, etc). So, is this CTU stabbing their SEIU and other public sec buddies in the back?…or as queen Stacy would say “y’all ain’t sh#t”!!!

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
