Chicago Public Schools proposal to close 2 charter schools slammed as ‘racist and irresponsible’ by teachers union – Chicago Tribune

From the beginning, the Chicago Teachers Union was critical of the Chicago Public Schools initiative through which Chicago Virtual Charter School and Frazier Preparatory Academy opened more than a decade ago.

Now the union is calling CPS’ plan to close the two charter schools “an admission of failure by the district after decades of charter proliferation.”

The education management company (charter school operator) for Chicago Virtual Charter School is K12 Inc.

For Frazier Prep it is Accel.

Here’s a list of 127 charter schools in Chicago, plus 15 others in Illinois.

I find it unbelievable how some education supporters are still mourning over the loss of 2/3 of the school librarians who used to work at CPS. They are waiting for the day when all schools once again have librarians. CTU teachers get an “F” in Govt. 101 if they don’t know how broke their state is.

As for the charter closures, CTU must be having their own Hillary syndrome over the fact that they didn’t walk away with the whole candy store with their strike. Sorry CTU, there’s no more taxpayer money to steal.

CTU cries wolf again. Nobody listens.

Aren’t there over 30 charter schools in CPS? How is the closure of just two charter schools an admission of failure? And isn’t the emergence of a charter school the recognition of failure of the existing system?

The CTU rhetoric is shameful. It insults my intelligence to read the absurd statements they make. It is absolutely insane to slander CPS as racist, which is an organization run by minorities primarily for minority students in a minority-majority city. The CPS student body is only 10% white and they are a minority in the administration and leadership positions! There are more white teachers in the CTU than there are racist oppressors in the CPS administration! There is literally no evidence whatsoever that these are racist decisions. No evidence whatsoever. Who is the oppressor? A black mayor? a black head… Read more »

Denying the obvious is still “too racist” for most people to confront. Distilled to its essence, the CTU’s communists want total power, and anything short of that is “racist.” And despite occasional protests to the contrary, unless all power is wielded by blacks, that too is racist. It’s time to accept that we cannot live together. Sad to say, but what other conclusion can be drawn? But just as Progressives cannot allow Deplorables to “go our own way,” black communists will never let white people “escape,” either. War is coming. History hasn’t ended, and today’s Chicago, today’s Illinois and today’s… Read more »

It’s basically becoming the red and blue state divide. Not sure a civil war is coming, but people are certainly self-segregating based on political beliefs.

Boston U. Historian emeritus Angelo Codevilla wrote several essays that are relevant. My tl;dr synopsis is, all highly placed people today share a set of beliefs that amount to a cult. The cult’s main sacraments (anti-racism, blank-slate, magic dirt, gun control, LGBT-superiority, pink-haired “girl with a penis” in the H.S. girls’ showers, Scoutmaster Pederast, etc.) are not specifically relevant, what unites this “Blue Elite” is their universal hatred of those who are not sufficiently “woke.” They literally loathe the “deplorables,” those they believe are apostates in their religion, and the elites’ main enjoyment is degrading, debasing or destroying whatever it… Read more »

The union types allege that Trump tax cuts hurt education–so why are the Democrats trying to end the cap on the state tax deduction? Won’t that cut federal taxes for the wealthy even more?

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
