Chicago Public Schools teachers say they were told by administrators to give migrant students passing grades – WGN Radio (Chicago)

Teachers in CPS elementary schools and say they spoke no Spanish, while their migrant students spoke no English, making communication virtually impossible; They added that because their schools were located in predominantly Black neighborhoods, they offered no English as a Second Language (ESL) support. Despite this, they say they were instructed by school administrators to give their migrant students a 70 percent in every subject and pass them on to the next grade.

This article should read CPS teachers were told to give ALL students passing grades. “Passing students on” has been the status quo for decades, but the union and administrators would prefer to ignore the elephant in the room and keep collecting their paychecks. The CTU/administrators will occasionally protest/yell about woke political issues totally unrelated to education to distract from the real issue which is the students are not learning and the district at all levels is incompetent.

People, they have been doing this for non-migrant students for years. Nothing new. It’s just that this time they said it in plain English (pun intended). Before this, the grade inflation/automatic passing was much more subtle and underhanded. „Did you provide enough ‚interventions’ to help Wilma pass? At least 3 x 15 minutes per week? No? Well, then we don’t really know why she is failing, do we? You can’t fail her.” ”Fred is bilingual, and you are not endorsed in his home language. Yes, I know you can speak, read, and write Klingon, and provide instruction and support in… Read more »

Are we already at the surreal stage in IL where we can commonly use the phrase “migrant students”?

THis being Chicago you have to wonder if passing grades somehow translate into more state or federal money for the school district?

Crooked numbers and undue pressure upon its members from the CTU? Really?

Apparently the teachers who report this decline to identify themselves or the responsible administrators. Even tho Chicago Public Schools claim to protect whistleblowers.

What difference does it make what test grades are handed out? At the end of the day the students can’t read, do math or much of anything else regarding learning. The school report cards show the reality of the situation and nothing gets better. Have a good laugh for life goes on in Chicago and nothing is going to change.

Simple, to find a qualified job applicant you need to require a college degree…………………………….. from a college that doesn’t have a DEI department.

How many of those concerned professionals, those dedicated educators committed to the betterment of our youth, resigned rather than violate their ethical standards?

Did CTU bring this up in the current contract negotiation? Too busy talking about Gaza I guess.

This is not new for Rockford school district 205. I have put this link up before but for those who are new to this site it is an interesting story. This is originally from 2019 so passing kids with little grade level skills has been happening for a long time and probably in many schools in Illinois.

Frankly, I want to vomit when I see some empty, self- gratifying award bestowed upon teachers. The horn tooting never ends with these folks and their administrators with one sunshiny article after another extolling their virtues, but when the shoe drops re how uneducated the 95% that graduate are , crickets or excuses. Disgusting.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
