Chicago speed cameras now ticket drivers going 6 mph over. The new rules resulted in about 300,000 citations and $11 million in fines in the first 2 months. – Chicago Tribune*

Veteran Chicago music producer Steve Albini, who was ticketed twice in April, cited one reason for favoring the cameras: They remove from the equation potential police bias over who’s pulled over and cited. “I would rather have speed cameras sending out tickets to people when they cross the speed threshold than leave that to the discretion of police officers, who have shown that they will abuse that discretion."

I’m shocked there’s more than one comment on this story as nobody pays to read the Tribune anymore. And who is Steve Albini and why should I care about what he says? And I don’t get his argument. He would rather pay a fine for speeding rather than get stopped for speeding by the police and possibly given a warning instead of a ticket based on the officer’s discretion? Is he saying that he was once stopped by the police after speeding and didn’t get a ticket and he is upset about this? You have the right to insist on… Read more »

Does the permanent victim class have to pay for speeding tickets? I don’t think so. They get everything else free from Lori in exchange for votes.

I think I know what he’s getting at. It’s been many years since I’ve been in traffic court but I noticed an absence of attractive, young females in traffic court. Naïve me assumed there weren’t any there because they paid the ticket instead of fighting it or trying to get supervision. Not in favor of speed cameras but maybe there is some justice with speed cameras now.

It’s because there aren’t many attractive young females remaining in Chicago which has its own traffic court in the basement of the Daley Center. They’ve all left or gain 100lbs

Yea OK, the cops are always looking to write tickets! Most don’t want to get out of the car any more than you want a ticket! Subsequently you have cameras. Nice revenue stream and the camera won’t give Lori the finger. How many maniac car jackers pay?

In Chicago I always go very slow, 5 mph under, and I don’t ever dare to make a right turn on red. Learned my lesson on both of these… But fortunately I don’t see myself driving into Chicago ever again, maybe Midway, no not even that Ill use a limo.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
