Chicago Teachers Union wants revenue meant for homeless if mayor’s tax hike passes – Illinois Policy

CTU demanded provisions related to affordable housing in past negotiations, but its recently leaked document makes clear its topline demand is not to help homeless Chicagoans, but to help Chicago teachers whose median salary is already more than $93,000. CTU’s bankrolling of Mayor Brandon Johnson's campaign and his tax hike initiative is a gamble that could pay off big time.

I have not met a teacher in my lifetime that was good at financial matters but one thing for sure when it comes to finances teachers are always out front and center with the usual “gimme some more.” Next up teachers will be wanting a cut of the gasoline taxes as their “gimme more” attitudes march on

“I have not met a teacher in my lifetime that was good at financial matters”. Au contraire, mon frere, for I have met more than my share apparently. You need to get out more. Your list of such people clearly is smaller than mine.

Interesting comment considering that your post contains ” (au contraire), au contraire mon frère” that according to a Google search “isn’t actually used in French and will cause confusion more than anything.” I might add that since you did not put the phrase in quotes perhaps the teachers you are referring to apparently were not the best at grammar too.

Well, of course they do. Why not? Lets give them all our money and all our children’s money…but, it still wouldn’t be enough. It is a bottomless pit. CLOSE IT! Start over.

What would be your response if your customers or boss said that to you? Somehow I don’t think you’d be nearly so cavalierly strident in your response with any such complainers. I don’t think “yes, sir; I’ll get right on it” would be your response.

Naturally her response would not be like that because, to begin with, there would be no comma between the yes and the sir. Also the y in yes would be capitalized and I will stop right there rather than go on with your additional grammatical errors. Perhaps they are not errors but written in such a way to create a straw man argument. Somehow though I think that you just might be a product of the Illinois school system which explains a lot right there without elaborating further.

And where will you find multi-thousands of qualified people to replace them before another school year starts? Any new employees would have to readily want your idea of a reasonable starting wage, long-term wage growth, working with a good number of hostile students, and working in some of Chicago’s least safe neighborhoods. I don’t think there are enough highly educated, intelligent college grads who are legally qualified to hold such jobs panting enthusiastically to be your job applicants.

I guess then…leave it closed. CPS is just Daycare, Food Service and Transportation, people can find other places cover these needs.

Also ya know…Based on the school performance evaluations outlined in many of the articles here, I am not sure the existing profile of a CPS teacher is “highly educated, intelligent college grads”…

I didn’t say CPS teachers at all. You’re giving a restriction there that I didn’t even imply. I did say the other two terms, though—intelligent and college grad. But, I didn’t say or imply they had to come from the current CPS staff, nor did I suggest they couldn’t. That’s all on you.

Goodness, I know…You were referring to replacements…for existing teachers and suggesting that they had to be intelligent college grads…and that requirement clearly isn’t part of their current job description. I am done – Have a nice day.

Well, for their replacements let’s make intelligence part of the hiring requirements for new job applicants, shall we? Its well passed time to insert that characteristic.

Many of the current teachers would opt in to the new situation, as being more desirable than their other options of Starbucks or Uber. They might even start to understand that they are supposed to teach academics rather than promote activism.

Being kind-hearted and generous people (as proven by our long tolerance for their current antics), we would probably be inclined to give them a second chance. But no more guaranteed jobs.

Old Joe didn’t make 93K on an annual basis until about 5 years before he retired. He also worked in the private sector.

$93k ain’t what it used to be. Bidenflation has really ravaged the value of the dollar. Imported Chinese electronics are quite cheap these days though. I just upgraded my PC the other day and I bought a computer with one of the faster consumer chips on the market for dirt cheap. TV’s are cheap as heck too. but everything else is sky high.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
