Months past a federal deadline, more than 90% of at-risk Chicagoans haven’t been told their drinking water could be unsafe. Of the 10 cities with the most lead pipes, only Chicago has confirmed it hasn’t finished sending out notices.
Lead in drinking water has been a known health risk since the late 19th century. Lead service lines have been supplying water to homes on the southeast side of Chicago for over 100 years. Nobody in officialdom made a stink about lead service lines in that neighborhood when it was overwhelmingly white working class. NOW that the neighborhood is majority minority, progressives, through their media mouthpieces, to include the the Sun-Times, say that the city has been derelict in its duty to remediate the service lines.
