Among the consequences of economic growth that badly lags national averages are billions of lost revenue every year. Yet denial reigns in Illinois, fueling the vicious cycle of demand for higher taxes.
The thing is, there are so many other avenues to encourage illegal immigrants to self-deport: debanking, taxing remittances, fining employers, and cutting off welfare benefits. But every Republican interest group won’t let this happen. The banks need the remittance income, and large employers and farmers love the cheap illegal labor.
