The costs of decades of misconduct by Chicago police have grown enormous as the city settles lawsuit after lawsuit using expensive private counsel to handle most of the work. Now a Tribune investigation has provided the most detailed analysis yet of how Chicago’s legal strategy has run up costs, making these misconduct cases more expensive on average for taxpayers than similar legal claims in New York and Los Angeles.

And that is not acceptable,” Tripodianos said. “And there must be justice. Real justice.”

Johnson, who (like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani) supports programs such as city-run grocery stores, has sought massive tax increases and bond issues to support the city’s bloated budget and union pension funds. With the new bond set to be paid in 20 years, he can continue to spend and leave the actual payments to future mayors.

In the ruling, Kness specifically rejected the city’s attempts to claim the white plaintiffs can’t sue because they never actually attempted to apply for payment through the program, which the city had made clear was limited only to people who are black.

The trend in special elections around the country for the past several months has shown spiking Democratic voter turnout and tanking Republican turnout. And some preliminary primary election results from earlier this month show the same trend here.
