Commentary: We’re CPS parents. Some CTU contract demands would hurt children’s education. – Chicago Sun-Times

"Accountability must be at the heart of any new CTU contract. All parties should be committed to improving learning outcomes and creating environments kids want to experience daily. We challenge teachers to tie increased compensation to performance and student outcomes."

Down the road when the CPS contract is approved and then ratified will the increases in compensation be based on an individuals merit and performance or will this be a blanket across the board raise? How is this fair to teachers whose performance and dedication to educate their students. There are many teachers who truly care but also there are many just there without the training and experience who will also just the same raise. Every teacher should be evaluated on a one to one basis on what their compensation should be just like in any profession. My wife who… Read more »

That’s how it works for non-union scabs. They only get a raise if they lick the boots of their corporate overlords. Union members negotiate collectively and will only settle when all members are paid appropriately. No man or woman left behind. Union Strong!

Note to CPS Parents. Don’t confuse the CTU/Democratic Party symbiosis with education.

All parties should be committed to improving learning outcomes? Stacy Davis Gates and our own JShark need to explain again that they are all about the money. The Sun Times apparently hasn’t gotten the message yet.

Apparently you haven’t gotten the message. We don’t owe you anything. I doubt you even live in Chicago. Probably some low life scab from Plainfield or Joliet that is too frightened of his own shadow to even visit the city. Your opinion about the CTU or Chicago is meaningless.

You could have made a point by arguing that teacher unions are committed to improved learning outcomes. You chose instead to escalate the belligerent talk. Yes, I get the message.

You could have minded your own business and worried about your own local issues. You chose instead to stick your nose where it doesn’t belong. Maybe attend your local town meeting and help plan your next corn festival or whatever it is you do out in the sticks. What Chicago does with their schools or anything else doesn’t concern you Karen.

Keep talking, it just keeps getting better and better. Fling that nice guy mask as far away as you can throw it.

The beauty of the CTU’s current full on terrorism is that FINALLY the parents and taxpayers now understand what many others have known for decades: CTU are thieving scum who don’t give a fig about education and care only and completely about stealing as much money as possible from the taxpayers. Until now, CTU parasites have hidden behind children and concealed themselves as the friendly teacher but now that mask has been ripped off. Everyone now sees the rabid monster hiding in the classrooms. Elimination of this charade will lead to the destruction of these grifters and to their bleak… Read more »

The problem you have JShark is that City schools have $24B in debt (pension liabilities included). This enormous sum cannot be paid by the City alone, and, in what will be a difficult endeavor in today’s fiscal and political environment, CPS will be a tin cup mendicant seeking funds from others for some time to come. It is challenging to tell residents of Joliet and Plainfield to shut up when the State is constantly being begged for additional funds. Moreover, the school system’s dismal academic performance does not support the creation of a healthy economy, an essential condition for servicing… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
