Cook County preparing for $211M budget deficit for 2026 – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle presides over a board meeting on April 10, 2025. (Eileen T. Meslar/Chicago Tribune)The county is expecting a general fund shortfall of $102.6 million, thanks mostly to higher wages and fringe benefits when its current contracts with union employees expire. Its health fund, meanwhile, is projecting a $108.8 million deficit thanks to a significant drop in patient revenues.

$211M is about two percent of CC’s 2025 budget. Just a little belt-tightening would erase that deficit. All it would take is for CC to be a responsible steward of taxpayer money and not assume we have infinitely deep pockets.

Cook County needs to stop taxing suburban Cook County to support Chicago’s progressive agenda How many suburban residents are going to receive guaranteed income? Where is the healthcare for suburban residents? Very little if any healthcare services in the suburbs.

If you want to turn Chicago into an illegal immigrant magnet then you should expect higher costs for uninsured at Cook County Hospital. This is a self inflicted wound and is easily solved. The state, city and county could partner with ICE to help deport illegal immigrants and their costs for covering uninsured patients would drop dramatically. Heck, they could just station ICE agents at the door of the ER and they would save a ton of money. I’ll bet a couple of guys wearing ICE halloween costumes could do the trick. As far as costs increasing because of a… Read more »

Absolutely on point and yet the voters will re-elect politicians like Preckwinkle each and every time. The situation is the will of the people so who are we to complain?

It is honestly mind boggling how stupid these elected officials are. The state is broke and Cook County is broke. But it is the same taxpayers they keep thinking they can bleed to death to support their retirement. What don’t they understand?

Why is it know one in press asks or provides data on the number of collective bargained union cc employees hired with one time ARPA-COVID funds? (same for city, state, CRAZY 9,000 units of gov)…who’da thunk, looks like none of these heroes are getting laid-off. Just non-collective bargained employees and contracted spending. Preparer to pay-up for all the hires hired with spent ARPA-COVID funds chumbolones!!!!

Well, my goodness, of course it would be increased salaries and benefits…gotta enhance those government employees comp pROgrams! Otherwise, might have to cut patronage jobs and someone’s brother in-law might have to get a real job or they might vote for someone else. and of course, we couldn’t ask the Government to right size the employees when their revenue drops…nope, just go back to the tax well and get more. The Patient “revenue” she talks about is actually more of our tax dollars from the fed to pay for Medicaid. That’s her “revenue” that she will fall short of next… Read more »
