Cook County property tax bills finally getting mailed, due Dec. 15 – Illinois Policy

The months-long delay left local taxing districts, such as Chicago Public Schools, struggling to bridge costs while the tax bills sat in limbo. CPS borrowed $450 million to cover anticipated property taxes, requiring it to budget $23.2 million for interest on those loans in fiscal year 2026.

Correct me if I’m wrong, been gone for five years. Aren’t tax bills two installments, one in spring one in fall? So this tax bill will be one huge bill for the whole year? With some big increases? And due within one month? One big hit instead of two bills spaced a couple of months apart? Some people are going to be hit really hard with the holidays approaching. And another installment in spring?

I hope it is not an annual bill. I remember paying the first half in late Spring. I think the problem was the need to change the county printers from portrait to landscape to account for all the extra columns needed before the decimal point.

Hopefully the incompetents put in the correct data this time. Look at your tax bill carefully. Last year Cook County removed our homeowners and senior exemptions. Then you have to yourself and correct their error. And their error will cause problems for you at the bank with your escrow account. When will Cook County hire competent people, instead of friends, relatives, and political hires?
