Overall, the school system’s spending will remain steady at $9.4 billion in the 2023-2024 school year, but more money will go directly to schools. Buoyed in part once again by federal COVID-19 relief funding, CPS is also issuing its highest-allowed property tax increase of 5%, or about $131 million, to help support its budget.

A good question to ask or for wp research regarding CPS crazy $9.4 billion budget is how much $ go into classrooms vrs $ for pension, administrative staff or debt? I’ll bet taxpayers would be shocked–“the overall $9.4 billion budget — which also includes pension payments, central office staff salaries and expenses tied to CPS’ significant debt “
This Chalkbeat article states that out of total $9.4 billion 2023-24 CPS budget, $4.8 billion is scheduled to go to schools. Or, in other words $4.6 billion ($9.4b – $4.8b = $4.6b) goes to “pension payments, central office staff salaries and expenses tied to CPS’ significant debt”–If that’s correct that’s SHOCKING!!!
“After years of steady increases, Chicago Public Schools unveiled a proposed $9.4 billion overall district budget Tuesday that would hold the line on spending in 2023-24.
Roughly half — or $4.8 billion — would go directly to schools.”
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
Bend over Chicago. You voted for this.
