The CTA recorded an average of 912,749 weekday riders in March, compared with more than 1.4 million in 2019. That’s about 62 percent of pre-pandemic ridership. So far this year, the CTA has had 22 days when ridership exceeded 1 million, 12 of which were in May. In 2023, the CTA had 27 days that hit that mark.

Ridership isn’t going to increase the way things are now. Office occupancy isn’t improving and now they’re turning office space into residential. That’s less office space, less office workers which means less commuters. The fact that Dorval hasn’t realized by now that the CTA needs to be right sized tells me he needs to go. This administration is not concerned with running things right.

With the reluctance of people to travel downtown, office workers working remotely, empty office and commercial buildings, where are all these riders going to come from? And don’t forget crime, on the CTA and on the streets.
Where’s the money going to come from Dorval? You’re hundreds of millions in the red, and being kept afloat by Diaper Joe Biden’s free Covid bucks. Those are all gone by the end of the fiscal year. Then what Doofus?

Is anyone really surprised at the statements from the CTA leaders about where ridership is going? If they said it is only going down from here…they are out of a job. Come on, can’t do that. Better to double down and make outlandish statements about how things will be better as soon as you give us more money – then all will be well. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see it isn’t the lack of CTA personnel holding back revenue and ridership. It is lack of demand and likely fear of using the CTA due to poor security and… Read more »

In April of this year, transit ridership was about 75% of pre-Covid ridership nationwide. Chicago came in at 66% in the same survey. Effectively blaming insufficient staffing as the culprit, the Sun-Times’ Dave Struett devoted an entire paragraph to the CTA’s efforts to hire and train more bus and train operators. Even if we could believe the CTA numbers, they insist that the agency has 3700 bus drivers on the payroll now versus 3800 pre-Covid, plus 735 train motormen on staff versus 880 pre-Covid. The CTA has 97% of the bus drivers and 84% of motormen on staff at a… Read more »
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
