The article works very hard to avoid explaining that we’re talking about taxpayer funded paid “leave”. State employees in Illinois who claim to have one of a long list of qualifying relationships with a “birthed” or adopted minor child (mother, spouse, partner, guardian, etc etc etc) receive 10 weeks – 50 days, two and a half months – of paid time off from work. I’ve worked as a state employee, and seen how the absence of key employees for such a long period was “handled” by agency Directors and supervisors concluding that since no one is available to take the… Read more »

Yeah, I’m confused on the issue in general. One, I don’t know why she would withhold a benefit from one group of city employees that others already receive. Two, how hasn’t CTU bargained for this leave before? It’s so valuable yet they never requested it before?

Taxpayer should demand they work the same number of days the private sector works and the same number of years before retirement and the same retirement program. Feel like you are getting screwed, if the answer is yes, it is because you are.

Are you waking up in the middle of the night to spew your garbage? Your hatred is consuming you. Maybe go buy a retired Chicago police officer his breakfast. You’ll feel better.

I am getting up early to go to work, something a government Lackie would know nothing about. Someone has to pay for the useless cops, teachers, and firemen.
I get paid by performance, something a government Lackie would know nothing about. Try earning an honest living working and supporting a family sometime. Not an easy thing to do in Illinois with the very high taxes. One day (not soon enough) Illinois will lose my tax dollars.

Stacyshould trya stint in the private sector. Then she’d know what inequitable parental leave was all about.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
