I always got a kick out of the old “ that’s what other districts ( companies, firms ) are paying!” argument. And? IDK, this is what this job is paying in this district, etc. And the fact that the job can go unfilled for months at a time and things seem to be humming right along anyway make the necessity for the job suspect.

Exactly-I have asked this question a few times here and received no response. What are the day to day duties and responsibilities of a super especially in a small district like Rondout 72 which has 148 students? Once the curriculum is set at the beginning of the school year what does the supers job entail. To me supers are attorneys in disguise. They are there for contract negotiations. In Florida they have unit districts comprised of 40K students and 1 super. There are approx 67 districts to out 865 or so. Winnebago county has 11 districts each with a super… Read more »

My experience with superintendents is that they are good for PR and a standing tee time every Wednesday. Their power to discipline or remove teachers disappeared when the unions took over. They set “ policies “ that are circumvented on a regular basis, usually with a “ meet in the middle “ solution that really changes nothing.

Yes, but essentially being a school superintendent is more a political job both internally and externally rather than being a general overcoming obstacles on the way to victory. You have to bring charisma, insight, knowledge and politically savvy instincts into that position. Bean counters toiling into the night ought not to aspire to it. They’ll be wasting their time trying.

This board is stupid. The Board President is a friggin moron. It doesn’t matter whether this District doesn’t have a Superintendent for years…paying this schmuck $510K is just stupid anyway you look at it. Beyond any “explanation”. Nothing this person does at the District is worth $510K a year. There is nothing going on at ANY school district that is worth that kind of money or value. Nothing. At some point, these boards need to just say, we can’t and more importantly, shouldn’t afford to pay this person this obviously ridiculous salary and then place the weight of the pension… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
