Editorial: Amendment 1 on fall ballot requires deep study – Champaign News-Gazette*

"Here’s the big question — is it really the innocuous proposal that backers suggest, or a vague, incomprehensible grab-bag whose ramifications will be vast and unknown?...Questions abound, and even those who attempt to explain it apparently do not understand the amendment."

I noticed a single negative on two comments. A negative is an exercise in futility unless you voice your exception to the comment.

If you post a negative, please state your reasons. I’m confident I’m not alone in wanting to understand your position.

A negative can just mean that they disagree in whole or in part with the comment. It would be appropriate if they gave a reason on what they did or did not agree with so that I could give corroborating information unless it was just an opinion.

I’ve been saying this all along. This amendment blows up existing collective bargaining rights in ways that will confound local governments, including mainly school boards. If this were a stand-alone piece of legislation, it would be merely stupid. As a constitutional amendment, it is disastrously irresponsible.

Further, how would the amendment affect already existing state law governing unionized public employees? Critics suggest the amendment would eviscerate hundreds of existing laws because, of course, an amendment trumps a state law that conflicts with the amendment.

And, aside from this column, most of the regular press is asleep at the switch.

Is that a situation by choice?

The more ambiguous the provision, the more the courts get to decide. Delay and cost will wear everybody out.

And corrupt courts will side with the ruling party on this amendment, which is even more frightening. We need Tom DeVore to win or the last person here can turn out the lights. My family won’t be sticking around anymore waiting for some intelligent life in IL. Combined with no cash bail in 2023, this place is going to be like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The Ds are just too stupid to know it won’t be good for them either.
