Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Note how tepid the editorial board’s objections are. Note this too: “The goals of the rule changes are laudable. … The events of the past year … show us why teaching in ways that are sensitive to current events is crucial. It also has been a year of deeply polarized political rhetoric, though. Teaching standards, likely to influence a generation of classrooms, should not be swept into this charged environment. If ISBE wants, as it says, to help teachers create more inclusive classrooms, it needs to pause and let the political air cool.” The editorial board is recommending that leftists… Read more »
Well, that’s the pollyannaish view, surprisingly so for the Tribune.
ISBE’s been working on this for years with only the kiddie’s good at heart, then suddenly changes “progressive” to “inclusive” at the 11th hour to camouflage what they intend to impose appearing to bespeak left-wing bias?
Too thin, far too thin.
The CTRL Standards are something far worse than the noble-intentions-badly-worded Tribune Editorial Board’s opinion would have us believe.
Further, even if the Editorial Board’s view was correct, the Standard’s implementation – based on policies written by who-knows-whom for who-knows-what-purpose – will be inconsistent, disruptive and expensive.
These individuals on ISBE should be ashamed that they are pulling this garbage during the current covid environment. The legislature meets on zoom, holds separate conference calls, hides meeting times and hearings – while parents and taxpayers are left out of the conversation. This needs to be sent back to the dark place it came from. There is nothing for the kids here – let’s focus on their (real) education. Is it so long ago that we can no longer remember math, science and language arts? It is very interesting you don’t hear school boards, administrators and teachers screaming about… Read more »
Culturally responsive education standards are nothing more than Leftist indoctrination bent on spreading Marxist nonsense to our children at the earliest ages. They should be voted down and every parent needs to make their voice heard. Now, not later!
This editorial is an opinion, just as the editors opine that GF was ‘killed’. This is too merely an opinion but unfortunately, conforms to narrative and not fact. There is strong and convincing evidence that GF’s death was cardiopulmonary arrest due to pulmonary edema resulting from acute Fentanyl toxicity. His lungs were 2-3x their normal weight at autopsy caused by fentanyl. The original autopsy found no evidence of trauma, with “No injuries of anterior muscles of neck or laryngeal structures.” Everything else is narrative. you can look up these yourself with 5-25 autopsy and the 6/1/2020 notes of the interview… Read more »
