Editorial: The Chicago Teachers Union’s Priorities – Wall Street Journal*

"Corey DeAngelis, a Cato Institute adjunct scholar who is also national director of research for the American Federation for Children, reported on Twitter that 91% of the (CTU) members who responded said they’d participate in a 'remote work action'—that is, a strike—if the schools don’t pause in-classroom learning."

CTUs priority is getting as much of the cities $2 billion in fed Covid relief $ dedicated to increasing their membership as CPS population tanks, they state that flat out in their press releases. Threatening covid shutdowns is just part of the leverage game, thanks to jb giving them unlimited 24/7 strike over anything rights.

The school system, the city, the pension fund and the state are fundamentally bankrupt. Stop paying teachers; liquidate the pension fund; cut-off health benefits. Who they gonna sue? From what source will they collect? Who will pay the plaintiff lawyers? How many people can the courts put in jail? We probably can’t get to the checkbooks. Judges will probably protect those who sign the checks. So, to the extent of money in the bank, payments will continue for a time. The school board probably won’t approve a lockout, but teachers won’t show up anyway other than on a picket line.… Read more »

Schools have one product – education. In that simple task, the CPS system is an almost utter failure. Dear parents of children who are being subject to CTU, what more evidence do you need to pull your collective heads out of your collective rumps? CTU DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR KIDS. All of this has been an exercise in power consolidation. My children earned admission to selective enrollment – I spent(d) the money to enroll them in Catholic school… While stupid has invaded even the most reasonable “fundamental” curriculum, it is far from the stupid that permeates CPS. What a… Read more »

I think we all likely know the answer to yourclast thought, don’t you? “Education” in almost any large inner-city school system likely mirrors what you think about CPS. Blame the teachers if you must, but there are a few more causes for what you find there as well. “Education” in one place doesn’t necessarily match what it is elsewhere even if the curriculun is not all that different. There are too many discongruent competing forces at play to to think otherwise.

Bust this union now. School vouchers for all and toss the CTU scum to the curb.

Keep dreaming TPG. You live in a state where the legislature wants to enshrine collective bargaining rights for union members. Both republicans and democrats in office supported this amendment. You’re adorable.

Hubris. Likely a word that you dont know. When Illinois, cook county and chicago are bankrupt and your monthly thieft check leeching off the taxpayers disappears I’ll be laughing. If you ask nicely I’ll share some of my dogs food with you.Unlike SEIU and CTU members Im not completely heartless.

You’re too kind TPG. How will any of these pensioners survive when their monthly check is cut by 8.5%, 5.5%, or not at all? If it takes 15 years for bankruptcy then that 100k pension will only be worth 142k instead of 155K. I think they will be ok. But good to know that you will still be generous. Although you may want to save that money so you can pay your tax bill.
