Editorial: When school boards ride in limousines and students lack the basics – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

“My fifth grader cannot show me how to do exponents. For the last three months, we’ve been going back and forth with time tables and multiplication. She can’t add three digit numbers. She don’t know division,” Country Club Hills parent Latisha Hearon said. “My third grader, I’m literally in the classroom asking the teacher what is going on with spelling words. I haven’t seen the spelling list all year.”

This parent may well be asking herself what she is paying for in the majority of her PT bill.

Point in fact, the residents of Country Club Hills are largely NOT financing the operations of the local school district.
74% of the funding used to operate Country Club Hills District 160 schools comes from the State and Federal government.
So these profilgate board members (none of whom are named) are mostly stealing from non-resident taxpayers, i.e. you and me.
Bonus: the District has 44% chronic absenteeism.
5 minutes of googling would have revealed to truth to the Tribune editorial board via the State Department of Education online sources. But that violates the narrative so they avoid it.

School vouchers for all kids is the answer here. The parasitic primordial scum of Teachers Unions know that they will melt like vampires exposed to sunshine if faced with competition.

Yes Sir. School Choice. School vouchers.

The CPS is not about education, it is about money, benefits and pensions for adults. Education is just a cover up for the theft of taxpayer’s money.

I likely won’t change your opinion here, but you ought to keep in mind that there are no salaries paid to public school board members in IL. So, there is something of a tradition that school board members can opt to attend a state conference each year as an expression of gratitude for their otherwise free service to the community. Some school boards surely have more lenient rules applying to it and the bills to be presented for payment, but the concept itself seems fair enough to me. Your mileage may differ.

Yep, these conference trips happen a lot, likely sometimes they are worth it and sometimes not. I am more interested in what was done to address the Mom in the article when she voiced a question about math and spelling lists. Its June and she’s not seen spelling home work or a list, as she said…sheesh, that seems to be an area of focus for the Kids and providing education value.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
