Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. FOX32 is reporting less than 200 CTU members showed up for “day of action”—oooooch!
https://youtu.be/Kq7UpUWqMcY?si=SYxM406ixV8FgtxI
It’s my understanding CTU specifically choose 600 CTU members for “day of action” lobbying trip? So, what did the other 400+ CTU member do that didn’t get on the buses to Springfield? Kick back and take a paid day off on the taxpayers dime?
A “ day of action “ after many days of inaction due to the needless prolonging of covid restrictions, students and instructors walking out to protest Israel or a shooting near the school and a general failure to educate the students when school is in session. But when it comes to “ that money “ , it’s suddenly time for action. What a crock.
CPS/ CTU attempting to suck all the oxygen out of IL again, so that they can be lazier and fatter and not responsible. CPS/ CTU has become a cancer.
Speaking of pensions this is from the Miami Herald.

Does anyone remember Bell,CA pension fiasco in 2010?

Another day another Illinois (fill in the blank) needs more money. Yet we see all sorts of new spending programs quite frequently too. Years ago we would refer to this type of financial morass as an individual with champagne tastes with a beer pocketbook. The thing is though Illinois has emptied that “beer pocketbook” and continues to spend spend spend. What a mess built by Illinoi’s finest politicians that we keep forgetting that it is really the Illinois voters that are the culprits.
Prepare for no school next year or Chicago filing for bankruptcy.
You think Illinois leaders are ready to allow Chicago to seek bankruptcy protection? You think BJ is going to be a hard line negotiator and CPS won’t have school next year or CPS just won’t open? You win the delusional comment of the day on this site. That’s saying something.
You are really a nasty person……all your comments are nasty not constructive!!!!!!!!!!
Bingo – a reminder to be both polite and persuasive. But PPF is not wrong. The state will not permit Chicago to go into bankruptcy- the politicians can’t admit that kind of defeat and lose control of their incredibly valued political- government union complex. And Johnson won’t negotiate with the union in the way we typically define negotiations- he is there to give CTU as much as he can give them. My concern is that he will commit to more expenditures than the city can afford – why he was in Springfield asking for a billion dollars.
No, my comments are truthful and that hurts people who spend most of their time in a bubble with others only agreeing with them. Making predictions that are so far off from reality is not constructive.
PPF – when you are right (and you are) enjoy the privilege of being politely persuasive. There are folks here new to the issues. But again you are right here.
In general politeness became passé a long time ago here in case you haven’t noticed. Giving insults are so much more fun apparently.
Willowglen, I appreciate your comment as it is a good reminder. However, I do find it funny that you and others will call out my tone but I never hear you or anyone else for that matter call out all the vitriol that is spewed here on a daily basis. That behavior doesn’t bother me so instead I will typically match my tone to the person that I’m responding to. I also will call out wild and inaccurate predictions or suggestions to “fix” things when those topics have been discussed at length. If folks are “new” to an issue they… Read more »
I don’t live in a bubble and I like truth but you are VERY RUDE ……there is a difference…….!!
You don’t think it’s rude or nasty to fire teachers for exercising their first amendment rights? You don’t find it rude that someone wrote that CPS teachers can’t count to 20? I didn’t see any comments directed at any other commenters behavior. Nope, just people that point out the truth. Hard to take your opinion seriously when that’s the case.
If people post rude, misleading or inaccurate statements then I will proceed accordingly. I give what I get sue.
Right. BJ could give CTU 25 percent of what they’re “demanding,” and CTU and BJ will shake hands and declare victory. It’s a win-win-win for CTU, BJ, and taxpayers. I mean a win-win-lose.
They both will definitely declare victory. They may even pat themselves on the back about how great the city is when labor and the mayor can work together. Although I don’t think the union will settle for 25 percent of their demands. Instead of a 9 percent raise, I’m guessing it will be in the 4.5 to 7 percent range with a kicker if long-term inflation is above a certain amount in the later years of the contract.
It’s a win-win-win. The taxpayers voted for a CTU member as their mayor and they would get what one would expect.
Stop the nonsense, fire any teacher that goes to Springfield to try and blackmail for more of our money. If the CTU doesn’t like it, tough quit and get another job.
Idiots.
Kudos to trib for coming out and stating CPS & CTU are one and the same:
Fire teachers who petition their government? I don’t think so. Teachers are allowed to exercise their free speech as well as collectively bargain a fair contract. If YOU don’t like it, tough move and get another home in a different state. Idiot.
Fair contract for so called teachers who can’t count to 20 without taking their
Shoes off. The Chicago students are doing
Stellar in classes, NOT.
NASTY
I agree sue. Firing a teacher because they want to exercise their constitutional right to free speech is NASTY. It’s also un-American. What can I say, people like billy butler just hate America and everything it stands for.
I didn’t know CPS is keeping individual school budgets secret?: “CPS has informed schools of their preliminary budgets for next school year but — contrary to past practice — has refused to make those school-by-school budgets public. CPS has gone so far as to deny reporters’ Freedom of Information Act requests under dubious pretenses.” and: “For a mayor who speaks often about his commitment to transparency, refusing to make public these school budgets is farcical. It also likely is fruitless, if the motivation is to keep the bad news from further inflaming lawmakers.” What an F-ing joke at +$29gs a… Read more »
