The growth rate for the number of electric vehicles registered in Illinois dropped during 2024 compared to 2023. Specifically, the total number of EVs registered increased by 31,459 for the period from 1/1/23 to 12/15/23 but by only 28,954 for the same period in 2024. In other words, while the number of EVs on the road in Illinois is still growing, the pace at which it is growing has now declined.
Those numbers are from the Illinois Secretary of State, which handles the registrations.
As of the last report in December, Illinois had 122,775 EVs registered.

As part of Illinois’ Reimagining Energy and Vehicles plan, Gov. JB Pritzker set the goal of one million EVs on the road in Illinois by 2030 – five years from now. At the current pace, however, it would take ten times that long – 50 years –to reach that goal. And that assumes no further deterioration in the rate of adoption, which is likely given the incoming Trump Administration plans to eliminate the federal retail tax credit for EV purchases and slash myriad federal subsidies up and down the supply chain for EV components.
The bet on EVs by Illinois and the federal government is another failure of government central planning. All four of the state’s marquis, taxpayer-subsidized EV projects are struggling or dead, Rivian, Gotion, Lion Electric and Stellantis. The Stellantis project in Belvidere foundered before it could even be launched so no state money has been spent on it. That project remains in limbo. Lion Electric, too, never hit its employment target at it’s nearly inactive plant in Joliet, so no state money has been spent.
Electric vehicles may be the future, as is often said, but they are not ready yet as most consumers see it, so hundreds of billions of dollars are being lost on a premature bet.

Personally. I agree with the person who stated that Hybirds are potentially the best way to go for the future. But the premium is ridiculous. Is this a price gouge be manufacturers? Or is it really that much more expensive to manufacture? In either case, until the cost comes down I won’t be buying one- nor an EV.
Its clear a lot of people don’t understand the difference between hybrids and hybrid plug-ins. A hybrid is not a EV and doesn’t have the issues (nor a plug)
Pritzker will do whatever it takes to regain the momentum for EVs. I sense more taxpayer abuse (in the form of subsidies) is needed.
Quick Star, a Quit trip subsidiary, just built a facility in South Beloit, Illinois. There are 12 Tesla chargers on the lot. I have never seen one vehicle using them and I drive by frequently. Electric vehicles will save the planet said Pinocchio
Have you tried there food? I go to Kwik Star in Illinois (Kwik Trip in Wisconsin) on a regular basis. They have 8 piece jumbo chicken tenders on Wednesday for $9.99. But I buy my gas in Beloit just a few miles north for 30-50 cent less.
The food is good, great sales on pork chops and I also buy gas in Beloit, usually at the Clark right over the border. Save a few dollars every fill up

Nobody wants electrics. When I was in Florida after Ian and power was out for 2 weeks the Tesla drivers lost their smug look pretty quick. Non plug in hybrids like my Camry are the way to go. 4 seat family sedan, good fit and finish, NO PLUG and lifetime average of 47 MPG. Beat it hard and it says “thank you sir, may I have another?” 600 miles per tank, which is 400 more than my bladder can take.
And to think Ford developed the first practical hybrid with the compact suv Escape back in the 90’s. It isn’t sexy, John Kerry and connected Democrats can’t grift $M’s off it, but hybrids are proven and work.
Those Camry’s are selling like hotcakes. Toyota bet the ranch on their hybrid tech by making all Camry, America’s best selling sedan, hybrids. Honda hybrids are amazing, too. (I got one.) I suspect Toyota and Honda will run the table on sales this year.

Rav4 is an old style, it looks like an iPad glued to the dash. 2025 will be the last year for this style I wouldn’t buy it. The hyundai Tucson makes the rav4 look like something a Neanderthal would be driving all new sleek integrated with more features.
I think hybrid is best and proven green technology there is but the premium for hybrid cars is outrageous. New cars are the most expensive they’ve ever been and the premium makes the money payment for even the least price conscious buyers. Hopefully manufacturers figure out a way to lower the cost but with demand for hybrids higher than ever, it’s unlikely.
I don’t drive many miles in a given year. I worked the numbers, and it would take me far too many years to get back the extra cost of a hybrid over a conventional ICE car from gasoline cost savings. So, I’ll stick with an ICE car, I guess.

It was on the news this week that EV’s have 42% more problems than gas and hybrid vehicles.
With the first major winter storm, I’ll be looking to see how many EV’s are on the road or abandoned. EV’s are dangerous in this kind of severe cold. I suspect most will never leave their owners garage or won’t venture far.

If you run out of electrons due to having to heat your EV interior to 75F when its 0 F outside, what do you do? Get a can of electrons and fill it up? Meanwhile the wife and kids froze to death. Or you have extreme range anxiety because yo can’t go very far w/o having to sit and wait at a charger, if you can find one out on your trip. Fair Warning: EV’s are impractical and unsafe in severe cold weather.
Hybrid and hybrid plug-ins are entirely different animals. Hybrid no plugs make a while lot of sense and don’t have the big cost difference.
that can be true for short trips, but on average cars with IC engines lose only 1-2mpg with the a/c on.
Then why do I get the same mpg in the winter than I do in the summer?
Worth noting that hybrids get materially lower mileage in cold, too, which is not often discussed. No big deal, but enough that I have noticed it on my Honda CRV.
