Explained: Why Did the State Pause a Health Insurance Program for Undocumented Immigrants? – Illinois Answers Project

Gov. J.B Pritzker, seen here in a file photo, has come under sharp criticism for placing limits on state health insurance programs for undocumented immigrants that his administration initially created.“We are seeing month over month a high level of growth with enrollments,” Pritzker spokesperson Jordan Abudayyeh said. “We sat down with the General Assembly and said we are going to need $1.1 billion to cover the cost. They decided to dedicate $550 million dollars for the program and — let’s be clear, that’s a significant investment and one of our most expensive new programs — but it wouldn’t be enough. That’s why we can no longer accept new enrollments.”

Doctors, hospital, dental, prescriptions, etc for 900 people for two million dollars? How math impaired would you have to be to accept that in the first place?

They lied on purpose to give the illegals free healthcare.

I see nothing where Congress has passed any Medicaid funding for illegal aliens.

How is this to be funded? Federal? (don’t see how). State?

Real question. Does anybody know the answer.

The state shares medicaid 50/50 with the feds, except for illegal immigrants, the state pays for that out of its own revenue.

Certainly that is how anyone with commonsense would view the law. However, I wondered if JOE had cut a deal with our beloved GUV.

Why the “pause”? Simple. State of Illinois finances simply can’t afford this new program, as demonstrated by massive expenditures incurred during just first months of operation. Illinois otherwise ignores health care concerns of its taxpayer constituents. Access to health care for many Illinois legal-resident gainfully-employed taxpayers is both expensive, often difficult to schedule in timely manner. Wonder if we taxpayers would receive faster, better health-care too, if we were these prioritized “new migrants”? Certainly “free medical care” is much cheaper than $50 copays, $5,000 out-of-pocket expense obligations, and $1,000/month employee-obligation insurance premiums of our employer-provided health-care insurance coverage. We are… Read more »

Not exactly. Raised hospital rates are going to relentlessly occur with/without illegal immigrants or others who decline pay for medical care. “Insurance”companies can only raise rates as a function of prior years’ payouts. Insurance companies need to pay out higher reimbursement to some entity in order to raise profits annually. KFF studies indicate over 1/3 of American Healthcare spending is on admin (which adds zero benefit to buyer-seller transactions). The only cure for all this corrupt tragedy would be: do away with third party payment and revert to cash-pay. IRS can guarantee payment of personal debt to medical providers, and… Read more »

Hispanics in Pilsen and throughout Chicago and IL are free to purchase healthcare insurance for their illegals. No one is stopping you from putting your $$$ where your big mouth is. Same goes for the Catholic church.

No kidding! Really Jordan? You guys are just now figuring out that this silly idea costs too much? Normally competent government does a pretty detailed cost analysis before you launch a program. But not you folks– with this well thought out boondoggle– Let’s just run with the crazy idea and we’ll figure out how much it costs later. Let’s just look mighty woke and figure out who to stick the cost to later. Was a great plan with terrific execution from the start. This is just uncontrolled buffoonery

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
