Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Democratic legislative leaders herald budget deal, but day ends without a vote – Chicago Tribune/MSN

Gov. J.B. Pritzker delivers his annual budget address in front of House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch and Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford to a joint session of the General Assembly on Feb. 15, 2023, at the Illinois State Capitol. The deal allocates about $550 million for the Medicaid-style program that covers immigrants 42 and older program, according to the governor’s office, and gives the administration “tools” to control the costs. Pritzker agreed to assume any political liabilities for controlling future costs of the health care program after Democratic lawmakers refused to cut funding in other programs or enact the governor’s recommended cost controls, such as co-pays or income limitations, themselves.

On the other hand, this is an opportunity for the Republicans to drive a wedge between the Democrat’s base and try to score a few additional votes. Divide to conquer.

I would rather see the state spend $550 million, that we dont have, on US citizens in the form of slavery reparations then be given to illegal immigrants for Health care. For that price, we could fly them all home to be treated. What a slap in the face to the taxpayers of Illinois.

If you’re a migrant with no legal residency status, then you don’t care about your FICO score, because you won’t qualify for legitimate credit/loan. So you can afford to skip your co-pays, skip your rent (evictions take two years), forgo car insurance and license, and skip your utility bill payments. Life, footloose and fancy-free, black-market cash-payment employment, subsidized housing, food, phone, free education and health-care.

A life of ‘going underground’ or being ‘judgment proof’ would not be a pleasant life for citizens like us, but for an illegal arriving from a favela in Caracas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bae4e-IzAgU), it’s no different than the entirety of their entire life up to this point. Morever, the standard of living in Little Village, Albany Park and Pilsen are massive upgrades compared to the slums in Latin America. Running water, stable electricity, reliable supply chains for goods, intact infrastructure, trees and landscaping and greenery, roads accessible to vehicles, and some form of police, rather than gang, protection. Eventually they’ll be granted amnesty,… Read more »

From what I can tell, they’ve allocated $500B in the budget for a $1T program, and they’ll make up the difference through co-pays or income limitations. And the reality is that this program is going to cost $1.5T this year because, guess what, free health care by illegal immigrants is really popular. I believe that income limitations already exist, so that means nothing, so the rest comes down to co-pays. But we all know, medicaid patients aren’t going to pay co-pays. They’re just not going to do it. They don’t pay co-pays, ever. This means the program is going to… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
