Has interest in recreational marijuana in Illinois peaked? – Daily Herald*

Wellness adviser Adriana Vega is ready to assist customers at Sunnyside cannabis dispensary on Golf Road in Schaumburg. Adult-use marijuana sales have been legal for nearly three years in Illinois, but sales have seemingly plateaued recently. The state legislature's Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability revised the state's revenue estimates, reducing cannabis tax fund expectations by $8 million this fiscal year. It was just one of three general fund revenue sources where officials now anticipate fewer dollars than initially budgeted.

There are probably many more people growing their own with a medical use card. Many illnesses qualify and if mental illness qualifies most people in Illinois could grow pot.

The black market is thriving, from what I hear. I know some tokers and they don’t visit the dispensaries, too expensive with the tax, they say. I expect with a looming recession on the horizon, that the $80 an 1/8th with taxes will be a luxury few heavy users can afford, and the black market will pick up the slack for half the price.

I think the bigger unanswered question with states that have legalized pot, is it leading to increased blackmarket pot use laced w addictive drugs (i.e. fentanyl)? Also, I’m astounded how many young folks are out driving around stoned. you can smell it as they drive by.

Interesting that none of black financially disastrous S &SW burbs have profited from state dispensaries pot sales taxes …so much for equity?—-from articale –” while municipalities and counties with dispensaries have received a combined $144 million, IDOR records show.

That includes the suburbs of Addison, Arlington Heights, Aurora, Buffalo Grove, Carpentersville, Lombard, Mount Prospect, Mundelein, Naperville, North Aurora, Northbrook, Rolling Meadows, Rosemont, Schaumburg, St. Charles and Wheeling.”

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
