HB 3653: Gov. Pritzker Signs Criminal Justice and Police Reforms Bill Into Law – NBC5 (Chicago)

Among the changes is the elimination of monetary bail, which allows judges to release many people before trial. The bill was praised by Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, who called it a "step in the right direction."

It is amazing, many people and the media talk about the Stimulus Package and the $1400 or $2000 or whatever Biden wants to give away. They believe if they keep talking about the $1400, people won’t pay attention to the gigantic pork spending aspects of this awful bill. Fox mentioned last night that they calculated $800M in total waste in the proposed bill that has nothing to do with COVID. $1400 isn’t going to save the day – getting people vaccinated and back to a normal life will.

Does anybody at wirepoints for one minute even think that Pritzker read 700 pages of the bill, bet ya he didn’t read one damn page like he said he would. 2022 remember everyone what this man has done to the good hard working people of Illinois and no Pritzker this is not a great day for all of Illinoisans loose the pitch.

The police will stop doing anything because they would be crazy if they actually tried. Anonymous complaints against them will be investigated with consequences of disciplinary action or termination, use of force during any arrest is pretty much forbidden (all thugs comply during an arrest) and using any force could result in criminal charges, forget to turn on the body cam even during an intense moment could result in criminal charges, no bail, watch out anyone who signed a complaint because before the ink is dry the criminal is back on the street and looking to get even. Murder rates,… Read more »

Pigster…I like that one. His behavior is indicative of the contempt government has toward the people they are supposed to serve. 99% of the Counties in Illinois do not want this bill…2 want it. Pigster gets some political mileage by doing it…so time to sign. Totally disregarding what the people of the state want…because we are too stupid and can’t understand the complex social impact of these changes…uh huh. Not sure how this jackass can look himself in the mirror…pathetic.

Crime will go down simply because it will be self-defeating for victims to file. Who will report criminals that will be free to come after you for retribution? Fox and JB will take credit for lowering crime rates. That was easy, huh? Low information voters will keep anointing the real oppressors.

Another sad day in Illinois, this is going to cause major problems across the board. Pritzker we know you don’t give a damn but you’ve just gone to far. Conceal carry license bull crap, I pray my path or a family member isn’t affected by this new shitty law, it’s protects only one group or class of people do I dare say whom. Lawyers ya better brush up on your skills it’s gonna get mighty busy around Illinois, may you Mr. Pritzker and Kimm Foxx and Raoul rot in hell. Clueless absolutely clueless brain dead ah I better stop before… Read more »

“Lawyers ya better brush up on your skills it’s gonna get mighty busy around Illinois, may you Mr. Pritzker and Kimm Foxx and Raoul rot in hell.” Lawyers are actually really scared of this law. Most criminals don’t have any money. Their family posts the cash bail on behalf of the criminal. The lawyer then works against the cash bail and the bail gets released to the lawyer as payment at the end of the case. With no cash bails, it’s going to be harder for criminal defense attorneys to get paid. All these cases will get tossed to the… Read more »

No, I’m not in favor of this bill. You know the bill is bad when even criminal defense attorneys are against it! But they won’t say that out loud of course. But that’s what I’ve heard in private.

I am going to watch for unintended consequences. Debtsor has identified one which will likely impact the ability of defendants to obtain private counsel. I do wonder, however, what will be the impact of having individuals with numerous bench warrants accumulated because there is not much incentive to show up to court. Of course, it will be up to debate as to how much is numerous but it strikes me this is a great way to avoid correcting criminal behavior. And for a person without boundaries, who knows where it stops? There are a lot of things that took down… Read more »

Property values in the City and adjacent towns will be dropping like a rock. Also, why would anyone who has worked hard for their possessions and makes a priority of keeping their family safe want to live near a stop on any CTA line? Detroit was much smaller potatoes compared to what will happen here. Nice job JB and Kim.

The courts will issue warrants, and even detain, criminal defendants who fail to show up for court. I haven’t read the bill closely enough to know if they put a limit on the warrants for failure to show, but I can’t imagine they went that far. But who knows. The unintended consequences you speak are going to be higher crime and the reverse of gentrification; fewer cops, more retirement, and those still willing to be law enforcement are more likely to be corrupt and on the take, like Serpico. Higher crime areas will take up large swathes of the city… Read more »

“The bill was praised by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who called it a “step in the right direction.”

What direction do you mean, Kim? The legalization of pogroms, against all ‘oppressor’ races, ethnicity and religions, to address the #1 crime against humanity, systemic racism?

If you don’t have your concealed carry license , get it . Lock and load because the criminals have nothing to fear from the Law. You are on your own.

Last summer, I spoke to several LEOs in Chicago and Cook County, who all told me, “Policing is over; buy a gun.” The issue is not even what the court’s will or will not do, it’s that most LEOs will not proactively police. Now with this law, it will just get worse. But all these politicians who voted for this law, will retain public and private security to protect themselves and their families, while everyone else is on their own.

Carry license and defending yourself is very important, but folks need to be careful with this carry license and “get a gun” statements. Those who carry must stop and think carefully about what situation would deem correct to defend yourself with a weapon. I believe people should defend themselves and but once you fire that weapon, the backseat critics and situation reviewers will question every incident where someone defends themselves. Once you pull the weapon and fire it…life for you will change and perhaps not for the better. People need to think about what might very well happen after you… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
