How Chicago’s Mayoral Runoff Could Play Out on a National Stage – The New York Times*

Side-by-side portraits show Brandon Johnson at left and Paul Vallas at right. Both men are wearing suits and glasses while standing before microphones. “This is a microcosm of a larger battle for the soul of the nation,” said Delmarie Cobb, a progressive political consultant in Chicago, “and being the third largest city, it’s going to get all the national coverage. This is going to be an intense five weeks.”

Not one word in this article about the source of Brandon Johnson’s funding, a brief mention halfway through that he is a former teacher union employee. But the writer did manage to make half the article about Trump and DeSantis, even though the topic was the Chicago mayoral race.

A WSJ editorial today noted that only $200,000 of Johnson’s nearly $4 million in contributions came from non-union sources. From the editorial: “It’s no exaggeration to say he is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the CTU”.

At least one NY newspaper gets the point.

As of June 30, 2022 Brandon Johnson was employed by the Chicago Teachers Union (AFT Local 1) as a Legislative Coordinator.

Unless that has changed, he is a current teacher union employee.

Meaning he is employed by the union, not Chicago Public Schools.

Combined with his elected Cook County Commissioner, he earns over $170K annually.
